Shalmali Library For Everyone

Shalmali- Library For Everyone started on 29th June 2019, allows people from diverse backgrounds to access good quality knowledge and strengthen their understanding in diverse interest areas, especially focusing on art and culture, environment and nature, literature and communities. Through the library's extension services, the library served as a unique platform for engaging Pune citizens to key environmental and social issues. 

 

Resources provided by different people, were utilized by readers, young and adults, to learn, associate and contribute in participatory workshops. Shalmali, Sanskrit name of Red silk cotton tree, is a multipurpose tree species, largely used for its medicinal value. Many birds, mammals, reptiles etc. are dependent on this tree species for food, shelter and roosting purpose. However due to frequent forest fires, road widening projects, deforestation, there is threat to these trees. The library, named after Shalmali tree, is an attempt to reach out to the society and contribute in conserving the environment through knowledge sharing and awareness.
